What Is Tunable White Light?
Tunable white LED light technology is a type of lighting that allows you to adjust the color temperature of the light from warm to cool. This adjustment can be made using intelligent lighting control devices or a wall switch.
Tunable white LED lights are popular because they offer several benefits, including:
- Lighting design benefits: Corporate, retail, private, or public spaces can be enhanced by adding lighting designs incorporating color temperature variations based on the time of day, event, or promotional activities.
- Increased productivity: Studies have also shown that exposure to bright light during the day can improve alertness and productivity. Tunable white LED lights allow you to adjust the color temperature of the light to a cooler setting during the day, which can help you stay focused and productive.
- Improved mood: The color of light can significantly impact our mood. Warmer light is often associated with relaxation and comfort, while cooler light is associated with alertness and energy. Tunable white LED lights allow you to adjust the color temperature of the light to match your mood and needs.
- Improved sleep quality: Studies have shown that exposure to blue light at night can interfere with sleep. Tunable white LED lights allow you to adjust the color temperature of the light to a warmer setting in the evening, which can help you fall asleep more easily.
How tunable white light works
Tunable white lights use two different types of LEDs: warm white LEDs and cool white LEDs. The warm white LEDs produce a more yellow or orange light, while the cool white LEDs produce a more blue or white light. By controlling the amount of each type of LED that is used, you can adjust the color temperature of the light provided.
Are CCT and tunable white the same?
CCT is the acronym for correlated color temperature. The “color” of a white light can be considered cool or warm, and this scale is commonly expressed in degrees of Kelvin, e.g., 3000K. This measurement of the color temperature of light spans from 1,000K to 10,000K. The lower the number, the warmer or more orangish hue the light will have. Higher numbers indicate a more blue light.
The CCT of a light source essentially represents how yellow/orange or blue the color of light is emitted. A tunable white light indicates the capability of a lighting fixture to produce variable light along the spectrum.
Boca Lighting and Controls offer a variety of tunable and dimmable light fixtures for those spaces where temperature adjustment is essential.
