New Hotel Earns Praise for Forward-Thinking Design
The new Luma Hotel in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco has acquired an impressive list of adjectives since it opened during the summer of 2022. The “precedent for the next wave of San Francisco’s hospitality scene,” “modern and innovative,” “a fresh independent spirit,” and “forward-thinking” are just a few of the phrases being used to describe the new hotel.
Photographer Dylan Patrick had this to say on Instagram, “One of my absolute favorites from my recent #hotelphotography shoot for the stunning new @lumahotelsanfrancisco”
Located in the San Francisco sports, technology, and medical hot spot, the Luma Hotel is the first hotel property in Mission Bay. The property is already a preferred destination for athletes, musicians, concertgoers, and conference attendees and a striking landmark for many reasons, including the unique exterior and interior lighting that emulates the colorful salt ponds formerly found nearby.
Color Palette Supported by Lighting Design and Color-Changing Fixtures
According to Hospitality.net, the color palette is infused with cool neutral tones with pops of teal to play upon the touchpoint where water meets land. The hotel’s exterior plays upon LUMA’s name, meaning “bright light,” and features several light installations that serve as artistic contributions to the property as well as reflect the city’s Illumination program. Back-lit, laser-cut panels that emulate the salt ponds encapsulate the entryway to the hotel and are set to display an array of changing colors at night, in addition to a beam of light that stretches up the corner of Third and Channel Street.
Lighting and Controls Designed to Make a Statement While Also Being Practical
Stanford Hotels Director of Lighting Design Jackie Hui describes the Luma Hotel design as a balance between esthetics, longevity, capabilities, and practicality. According to Hui, Standford Hotels philosophy is that lighting profoundly influences how a guest perceives their surroundings and experience. Proper lighting dramatically renders a space by enhancing the aesthetics and the architecture to inspire guests’ experience with a memorable, lasting impression. The lighting system must also be energy efficient, sustainable, and designed to be low-maintenance. As owners and operators of the facility, Stanford Hotels is vested in the long-term performance of the lighting fixtures and controls.
The San Francisco Giants played a home game the night the exterior was first illuminated. Hui remarked that “the crowd exiting the game experienced a wow factor as they crossed the 3rd Street bridge into the Mission Bay neighborhood. People stopped for selfies in front of the hotel and commented about the design.” Hui also described how vehicles stopped by the traffic light stared at the hotel and missed their green light. As cars passed, the drivers honked the horn and shouted positive comments.
Lighting Design Helps Tie Together The Exterior and Interior
Inside the hotel, the lighting design continues the efficiency and style theme with smart controls and light features that make any event memorable. Hui described an effort to bring the “outside-in” to deliver a consistent theme and experience.
The hotel is LEED Silver certified and uses innovative adaptations, including a rainwater harvesting system, flooring made from recyclable material, and lighting motion sensors to promote energy efficiency. All lighting fixtures are environmentally friendly and have been hand selected to communicate the intention behind the design.
